Bringing some Soul to Brooklyn Bowl

Funky soul group JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound is coming to the Brooklyn Bowl Friday, August 17. JC Brooks has been noted by the New York Times as “Neo-soul Glory”, and the Chicago Tribune claimed that “The Uptown Sound is the real deal.”

Taking the stage with raw emotion and uncontainable energy, the Uptown Sound labeled themselves as Post-Punk soul and that they are. Added with a touch of R&B, this band creates a “lively set of gritty old-school soul and funk injected with raw garage-rock aggression”, as said by KEXP.

Accompanying JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound will be The Revelations Ft. Tre Williams, Mingo Fishtrap, DJ Jack Dutone (Brooklyn Soul Club).

Fri 9/14 Royal Southern Brotherhood

As said in their most popular song "Gotta Keep Rockin'", the Royal Southern Brotherhood keeps on rockin'.

The southern rock group comprised of Mike Zito, Devon Allman, Cyril Neville, and Yonrico Scott  began jamming in saloon bars from Mississippi all the way to Maryland and will now be in the Big Apple on Saturday September 14, 2012.

The combination of having the talents of an Allman and a Neville in this band wows the crowd before the music even starts. After that first hit of the guitar string you know you are in for a special night of authentic southern rock.

The Royal Southern Brotherhood were nominated for the "Best Blues Rock" award by the Blues Music Foundation and won the 2010's Blues Music Award.

Bonerama with Mingro Fishtrap & Monophonics

Saturday, June 23

Combining sounds of vintage funk, classic rock, and improvision, Bonerama takes the classic New Orleans brass funk music and makes it its own breed of sound. Bonerama has been recognized by Rolling Stone Magazine as, “the ultimate in brass balls” (Rolling Stone, 2005). They have also been noted for, “crushing ensemble riffing, human-feedback shrieks and wah-wah growls” (Rolling Stone, 2007).

Also performing this evening, Mingo Fishtrap, holds different musical characteristics. As noted by David Lynch of the Austin Chronicle, Mingo Fishtrap is, “Tight n’ punchy horns, deep rhythms, restless melodies, and emotive singing had garnered Mingo justified respect as a live powerhouse.”

Mingo hones in on soul, R&B, and funk music to get the crowds dancing for hours. Their influence include Motown, Sly and the Family Stone, and Otis Redding.

Psychedelic soul and heavy funk band, Monophonics, consider themselces a sub-genre of soul music with mixes of soul and psychedelic rock. Staking their claim in the Bay Area of San Francisco, the Monophonics have toured all around California up to Motown and down to Louisiana and now making their way to the Big Apple.

6th Annual Nolafunk.com Mardi Gras Ball

6th Annual Nolafunk.com Mardi Gras Ball @ the Hiro Ballroom in NYC
Saturday, Feb 18- Sunday, Feb 19, 2012

Mardi Gras. The mere mention of these two words convey thoughts of wild celebrations, beads flying through the air, feathered hats, free-spirited dancing and a lot of booze and smiles. Nolafunk.com will help create this scene with your help. We’ll provide you with masks, hats, white cloths and beads. Lots and lots of BEADS! So bring your Mardi Gras outfits and your will to dance. The 6th Annual Mardi Gras Ball might be the best yet.

BONERAMA

Even in a city that doesn’t play by the rules, New Orleans’ Bonerama is something different. They can evoke vintage funk, classic rock and free improvisation in the same set; maybe even the same song. Bonerama has been repeatedly recognized by Rolling Stone, hailed as “the ultimate in brass balls” and praised for their “…crushing ensemble riffing, human-feedback shrieks and wah-wah growls.”

KERMIT RUFFINS & THE BBQ SWINGERS

New Orleans is the only place on the planet that could have produced native son Kermit Ruffins. Whether he's blowing trumpet on a Louis Armstrong classic or one of his own hot numbers, Ruffins embraces the tune with the true spirit of the city. Ruffins' music, like New Orleans itself, swings hard with a big heart as it remembers tradition and the importance of good-timin’ fun.

Past Mardi Gras Ball performers include Dr. John, Anders Osborne, Big Sam’s Funky Nation, Bonerama, Eric Lindell, Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds, Soul Rebels Brass Band and Tab Benoit.
